Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of the Bronx at 653 Melrose Ave, Xochimilco Family Restaurant offers an authentic and heartwarming Mexican culinary experience that feels like a genuine family gathering. Specializing in traditional Mexican and family-style dishes, this cozy gem invites diners to savor flavors that carry the rich heritage of Mexico with every bite.

From the moment you step inside, the restaurant’s charming, intimate atmosphere instantly puts you at ease. Thoughtfully decorated with vibrant Mexican accents, Xochimilco Family Restaurant goes beyond just serving food—it creates an inviting space where the lively spirit of Mexican culture shines through. Customer Mario Ruiz captures this perfectly, describing it as a “beautiful Mexican restaurant to build an appetite for something special,” where each dish tastes like it was lovingly prepared at home.

The menu is a celebration of authentic Mexican flavors, carefully curated to offer something for every palate. Start your meal with classic appetizers like the Frijoles con Chorizo, where slow-cooked refried black beans meet the smoky richness of Mexican sausage, or indulge in freshly made Guacamole with chips that offer a creamy, zesty prelude to what’s next. The Pico de Gallo and house-made green or red salsas perfectly complement these starters, delivering fresh, vibrant notes that awaken your taste buds.

For main dishes, the Mole Poblano stands out as a signature item—free-range chicken bathed in a complex sauce where dried peppers, spices, fruits, and subtle hints of bitter chocolate come together in a symphony of flavor. This is comfort food elevated to an art form. Adventurous eaters should also try the Barbacoa de Chivo, a tender, herb-infused steamed goat dish that reveals deep, rustic flavors with each forkful. Not to be missed is the Bistec Ranchero, a thin-cut grilled steak served alongside fried white cheese, fried eggs, jalapeño, and grilled onions—a hearty and satisfying classic that perfectly balances spice and savor.

Seafood lovers will find delights like the Mojarra Frita, a crispy fried porgy fish served with your choice of yellow rice and black beans or a crisp salad, providing a delightful contrast in textures. Equally enticing are the Shrimp Fajitas and Shrimp dishes cooked in garlic sauce or breaded and fried, all served with thoughtfully prepared sides that bring a wholesome, satisfying finish to your meal.

The dining experience is enhanced by attentive, patient service that truly makes you feel like part of the family. Reviewers consistently praise the staff’s warm hospitality and genuine care—qualities that turn a simple meal into a cherished memory. Nina Soto-Silverio calls it a “hidden GEM in the South Bronx,” highlighting not only the food but also the family-friendly, cozy environment complemented by natural juices and expertly crafted margaritas.

Whether you’re visiting for a sit-down meal, ordering delivery, or simply stopping by to enjoy a refreshing drink, Xochimilco Family Restaurant delivers fresh, flavorful dishes that stay true to their roots. Customer Nicole Polanco emphasizes the quality and consistency even in delivery, mentioning that the food arrives hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor every time.

In every aspect, from the lively decor to the rich, authentic meals and heartfelt hospitality, Xochimilco Family Restaurant stands out as a beloved destination in the Bronx. It’s a place where food transcends nourishment to become an experience—one that leaves you feeling welcomed, satisfied, and eager to return.

I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. Although it may look small, it’s a very nice and decorated place. Beautiful Mexican restaurant to build an appetite for something special. The food was not a long wait and it felt like a dish you’d eat at home with family. Their customer service was great and patient which I humbly appreciate. I’m normally not a tortilla guy but I was happy to know that their basket of tortillas with their main dishes was plentiful. It felt like it was never ending! Lol I appreciate this restaurant and I will be coming back if not for dinner, then for sure some Tacos y Tortas.

As a visitor to the South Bronx, I was absolutely delighted by my experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by truly wonderful staff who made me feel welcome and right at home. The entire atmosphere was perfect, with great music filling the air and beautiful decor all around. What really made the visit special was the personal touch. I was delighted to meet the owner's daughter, who was a genuinely humble and gracious hostess. Her presence made the experience feel so personal and memorable. This is a true gem, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place with fantastic hospitality and a wonderful atmosphere.

I haven’t visited the restaurant in person yet, but I order from here often through Uber Eats and the quality is always amazing. The food always arrives hot, fresh, and full of flavor. Definitely one of the best Mexican spots I’ve tried! One suggestion: it would be great if rice and beans were available to order as a separate individual side (not only when choosing certain entrées). It would make it easier to try more of the menu while still enjoying the full plate experience. Overall, highly recommend!

Came to visit based on google reviews on the first day of the trip to NYC and the Bronx. And this restaurant was the best out of all restaurants we visited in 4 days in NYC area. Super friendly staff, good affordable pricing, and super delicious food.

I went with a small group and shared a few dishes. My go-to dishes when getting Mexican food are birria tacos and Huaraches. I got the Huaraches here and it was cool. I would have scored it better if the shell/tortilla had a better texture to it. Mine was a little fragile and broke apart. It wasn't bad though. The mole and tacos were good. The best part was their aguafresca.

Homemade Mexican food, if my mother liked the pozole(homemade) that says it all. Our plates were delicious, first time here but I can truly say that it's my favorite Mexican restaurant. Very very happy, I live in Miami but whenever I come back to NYC I'll come here for Mexican food. I strongly recommend it. I came back and brought my family and we had a delicious meal.
